Trekking in Kentung

Kengtung (Keng Tung, Kyaing Tong) is located at the extreme east of Myanmar. It is home to various ethnic groups such as Wa, Akha, Shan, Ann and Halu. Each ethnic group has a particular way of living; as you see when you visit the village, they wear different costumes, speak dialects specific and have different lifestyles depending on whether they are farmers, fishermen or hunters.
All day hikes (generally easier) are from the villages of Kengtung, between the hills and rice paddies. In the evening you will return to stay in Kengtung (for now it is not allowed to spend the night in the villages).
You will keep a beautiful memory of this beautiful region, small, still preserved, villages and their friendly ethnic people.

Brief itinerary

  • Day 01: Sai Wan Village (Akhu) and Ho Lung (Ann)
  • Day 02 : Wan Pauk Village (Palaung), Wan and Wan Pon Pin Village (Akha)
  • Day 03 : Hokyin Village (Akha)
After breakfast, depart from your hotel in car to the village of Sai Wan in the east of Keng Tung. It is in this village where the ethnic Akhu, converted to Christianity, dwell. Walk to Ann Ho Lung village perched on a small hill. Like other minorities in the long isolated region of the world, the Ann and Akhu retained their ancient way of life and their traditional clothing. Living virtually self-sufficient, they make use of essentially natural resources such as picking, fishing and hunting. Return to Keng Tung and spend the night at the hotel.
Transfer by car for about 45 minutes at the Buddhist village of Wan Pauk, inhabited by Palaung. Discover their traditional lifestyle and their main handicrafts: weaving and silver work. Meet women dressed in red longyi around their waistline with bamboo or silver hoops. Walk in the hills covered with dense vegetation and villages clinging to the mountainside where the Ann with tinted teeth black live. On arrival in the Wan Pon town you will continue your walk to Wan Pin along a narrow trail. These are the villages of Akha whose headdresses are adorned with beautiful and embroidered clothing. Visit Pine Tauk waterfalls surrounded by jungles and back to Kengtung and spend the night at the hotel.
Have breakfast at hotel and depart by car towards Tachileik. Arrive at the crossroad Pankwei after 1 hour drive. The beginning of the hike goes through four villages which are populated by the ethnic Akha and situated at an altitude of over 1500 meters. It is the only hike around Kengtung where the running time is long (5 hours minimum) and quite difficult. Several religions are represented: Buddhism, animism and Christianity. Back at the starting point of the hike and drive back to Keng Tung. Stay overnight at hotel.

6 most asked questions about myanmar

Absolutely, it is a safe place to visit. Most of the country is considered safe by Myanmar government.  Insurgency problems near the Indian and Thai borders are in areas far off the beaten track and will not affect a traveller’s journey through Myanmar in any way.

Roughly saying, the best time is about from October until March next year. For this period, you can enjoy mild weather, it’s sunny but not too hot (23 to 30 degree temperature). It doesn’t mean that from April to September you shouldn’t travel to Myanmar. During this time, the weather is quite hot or there is heavy rain, but not everywhere and every time. The whole country is green and beautiful enough for your Myanmar trip, and it is even more joyful while you may get sweet and amazing discounts.

Traveling the whole Myanmar may cost a lot of time. For regular travellers, there are four places that you should take into account (we consider them as the “big-four”):
– Yangon: the former capital city, and usually the first destination of most trips to Myanmar, home to the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda
– Bagan: the largest archaeological site with thousands of temples scattered over 40 km square
– Inle Lake: the emerald lake nested among high mountains in Shan plateau, the true heaven for nature lovers
– Mandalay: the cultural hub and ancient city with royal relics

Besides these four, the extension would be Golden Rock, Kalaw, Pindaya, Ngapali Beach, and more.
